Generally speaking, a magical curse or hex is a formula that may involve spoken, written, or chanted words; symbolic enactments; candle burning; ritual baths; burning of incense; sprinkling of powders, salts, or dusts; and/or the manufacture and deployment of charms, amulets, or talismans.

The purposes of spells are varied. They include "drawing" or wish-fulfillment in regard to bringing bad luck or harm to another, "binding" spells to keep someone's magic from affecting
you or others, and "summoning" spells to call up spirits, ghosts, or even demons.  During these periods of sending hexes, black magicians invoke the spirits from the underworld; they perform rituals and sometimes even do animal or human sacrifices to bind their spells with the underground world. After using these techniques, they are in touch with those evil spirits. Sometimes they are even able to command these spirits as they wish.

Many times these curses are passed down from generation to generation, so an individual’s hex turns into a family hex. This is one reason why things like alcoholism or drug addiction can tend to run in a family.

Curses and hexes can be a challenge to remove. Some common recommendations are salt baths, smudging with sage/palo santo, or using selenite or black tourmaline crystals to assist in absorbing negative energies. These remedies can help, but many times a stronger treatment is required to fully remove a curse.
