When you perform Reiki on animals, you need to take several things into consideration. First off, animals are clairsentient (some more than others) and they feel the energy...but many times they're not sure how to handle it.  The most common side effect of Reiki on animals is the animal falling asleep.  This is very common with dogs and cats.  Pets really love Reiki and pet Reiki is a growing facet of the Reiki entourage.   

When doing Reiki on an animal, it's best to ask the Higher Self of the animal for permission to make sure it's appropriate.  Many times it is, but sometimes it's not for one reason or another.  They may be nursing or dealing with an injury and need to conserve their energy.  Always ask prior to healing.

Another thing to consider is how you do the healing.   Doing the healing in a sacred space is ideal and if you can't do this then you're somewhat limited as to how much energy you can pass on to the animal.  When you perform Reiki on an animal, always remember to go slowly and methodically or else you may scare the animal.  They can get confused on what's going on.  Finally, try to follow basic chakra positions when healing the animal, as the hands on healing really helps them move the energy through the chakras in an amazing way.
